the oval

The night skating has been really nice at the oval in 2004.

Team Dimon Sports skater Andrew Love happy in fast-twitch sprinterland

Opening day 2004

Blue sky, hard ice, and not too cold! Skaters are smiling (thanks to Jim Cornell for the photo)

John Dimon Skating a 3000m

For equipment buffs, in this race from the mid 90's, John was using a pair of dependable Viking skeeler boots, and darkstar blades.

Apolo Ohno Racing in Placid

Just unearthed from the Dimon Sports Photographic archive, a picture of a 15 year old Apolo Anton Ohno winning a pack style long track race on the lake placid oval. He is passing Paul Marchesee, skate maker extrodinare, and Pat Wentland, who would later become one of Ohno's Coaches!

Bob Tysen in the 2004 Lake Placid Marathon

Bob Tysen, Peter Doucet, Jeff Bakal, Jim Cornell, and Carla Langenthal going really fast.

Jane Lapato in the 2003 Christmas Classic

National Short track age group champion and all around terrific person Jane Lapato displays great long track technique, as shown from this picture from the last lap of a 1500m race (look how far she is ahead of her pair!)

A perfect ice day

Perfect, thin, hard ice, a pair of classic vikings on the feet, and a day warm enough to skate without a hat! This is Lake Placid heaven, the skater is facing directly towards the 1980 olympic rink where that famous game against the Russians was played.

The Spirit of Marathons

This Picture was taken during a 100k race held the day after the 2002 Marathon Ice nationals on Lake Morey, Vt. Many Dutch say that a great day on natural ice is what skating is truly all about. We have spend a lot of time on the natural ice of mirror lake here in Lake Placid, and we just had to include this picture!

The Warming hut during the Jack Shea Classic

A large group of skilled Canadian skaters from Ontario and points beyond showed up to contest the Jack Shea sprint classic. The warming hut was a little crowded, but a good time was had by all.

Night Skating on the 400m Oval

If you visit Placid, night skating on the oval is not to be missed, as it can be a beautiful experience, its usually lightly snowing, and the stadium lighting turns everything a very pretty shade.
