Top national and internationals teams have experimented over the years with various kind of blade oils. Putting a lubricant on your blades easing the sliding of the blade on the microscopic layer of water that the pressure of the blade on the ice creates. We like the lube made by Finn the best. The lube looks like a can of Wite-out (kids, ask your parents what this is) and you brush it onto your blades the night before, and it improves glide for about 45 minutes of skating the next day. Some even will brush this blade lube on immediately before stepping to the start line. One of the Dutch superstars buys this stuff by the case. Currently the ISU does not allow blade lubes in international and Olympic competitions, but if used the way Finn recommends, applying the night before and letting dry, the grain pattern of the blade's running surface is smoothed and it is legal!
